Objectives

At Tung Koon, we seek to enhance learners’ English proficiency; to reach our target, we aim to:

Provide opportunities for personal and intellectual development.

Extend their knowledge and experience of other cultures in the English medium.

Provide more opportunities to use English for purposeful communication both inside and outside the classroom

Make use of learner-centered instructions to encourage learner independence.

Make use of cooperative learning to promote interactions and transferrable skills.

Space Town has landed…

Starting in 2016/2017 Tung Koon School is proud to announce they successfully applied to join the new EDB NET section’s English programme – Space Town.

Space Town is an integrated programme to work alongside the General English (GE) textbook. Students’ reading and writing lessons and GE lessons cover the same topic at the same time.

Teachers

  • Lessons are taught by a native English teacher, a local English teacher with a classroom assistant.

Location

  • English Room students are invited into the English room to be fully immersed in English-rich environment.

School Lessons

  • Topics / Units are introduced via big book shared reading.
  • FIVE units throughout the year, each one focuses on different reading and writing strategies.
  • Student Booklets – have the topic’s worksheets inside.
  • E-learning – throughout the year iPad are used to enrich students’ learning.
  • Phonics Programme – every unit focuses on four different phonemes (sounds) to teach.
  • Self-directed Learning – every student will receive a self-directed learning booklet. Students can choose topics and activities they wish to study and receive prizes for completing work.

Example – Unit 1 – ‘My Sister’

Kids Read, is a ‘reading for fun / pleasure’ programme designed by the British Council and supported by HSBC.

Thanks to the programme we received around 82 books to enrich our library and students’ reading materials.

Using the books
  • Buddy Reading – Older brothers and sisters read to younger brothers and sisters. (P3 read to P1s / P2s. P5s / P6s read to P3 students.)
  • Extra-curricular sessions with native English teacher – fun lessons – games, craft activities, drama and making books.
  • Shared Reading – storytelling (teachers reading to students.)
  • Guided Reading (small group reading with a teacher)
  • Plays
  • Independent Reading
  • Community Event

South Island School (SIS) – ESF International School.

Tung Koon School and South Island School share a special relationship. Every year as part of their ‘Make a Difference’ (MaD) week, students from SIS enroll to teach our students English. The whole week is aimed at enjoying English and learning more about each school’s culture.

Activities include:

  • Buddy reading – reading stories to younger children
  • Cooperation skill games
  • Fun lessons – hands-on activities, singing and language games
  • Interview Practice P5 and P6 for secondary school entrance interviews
